Beginners Hatha Yoga Courses

PLEASE NOTE

1) You can join all Battersea Yoga Courses at ANY time (so long as there is space available)
2) Yes, you can attend this course on a 'drop-in' basis. (why we recommend attending the whole course: (a) it has been crafted to create a flowing structure, building on each consecutive week, (b) it works out cheaper for you!).

Battersea Yoga offers Two Types of Beginners Yoga Courses:

1) Beginners Yoga Courses

These beginners hatha yoga classes cover the foundation postures of Hatha yoga (asanas), Pranayama (breathing techniques), an introduction to Surya Namaska (the sun salutation), and meditation.

It is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience and provides an excellent start to the practice. They typically run for up to a 12 week period. Missed classes can be redeemed at the Monday night open classes at Chatham Hall.

Please see Timetable and Booking pages for dates, times and payment options.

2) Beginners Plus Yoga Course

This NEW course is for those with some experience of yoga who wish to expand their practice at beginners level and/or those who wish to do a more challenging class but who are still working on developing their knowledge and understanding of yoga.

Each lesson will begin with a gentle warm up and introduction to the themed lesson of the day which will be taken from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (widely regarded to be the First and most important book of Yoga philosophy). Having learned the basic sun salutation already, in this course we will look at incorporating some of  the foundation poses and some new more challenging yoga poses into flowing sequences. We will also explore some of the more advanced salutations including the advanced Sivananda and the Astanga salutations. Poses will remain accessible to beginners level but will provide more of a challenge where it is needed.

The second half of the class will explore deep restorative stretching asanas, designed to open up the body and relax the mind. Over each two week period we will look at forward bending, backward bending, inversions, twists, lateral flexion movements and balances. Each class will end with further exploration of pranayama followed by a long deep relaxation.
N.B It is worth having the Patanjali Yoga Sutras to support the course. There are many editions of this book. Therefore I suggest we all use the Alistair Shearer edition.  Please click here to order the book.
